From the Expert Panel to the Referendum Council: the role of truth and justice in constitutional reform
The constitutional "recognition" project that commenced with the "Expert Panel on the recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Constitution" in 2010, culminated this year with the Referendum Council's report. The outcome at the national constitutional convention was: Voice, Treaty, Truth. This lecture will explain the shift in reform proposals from the Expert Panel to the Referendum Council and explain the role of truth and justice in shaping the outcome at Uluru.
Professor Megan Davis is Pro Vice Chancellor Indigenous and Professor of Law, UNSW. Megan is a Commissioner of the NSW Land and Environment Court and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law. Professor Davis served on the Expert Panel (2010-2012) and Referendum Council (2015-2017).
