To mitigate the threat of climate change, Australia must transition to a low-carbon economy via new methods of energy production and by phasing out fossil fuels. This event will consider the major barriers to a transition away from fossil fuels.

Peter Yu, CEO of the Nyamba Buru Yawuru, will discuss the Yawuru community who asserted and won their native title rights in a bitter court contest, embarking on a bold agenda to transform the legacy of colonialism.

The Grand Challenge on Climate Change will launch three ambitious Climate Change Blueprints on Energy, Health and Justice.

The Blueprints provide a road map for the transition to renewable energy, managing important health issues like premature deaths from air pollution, and how to ensure that climate transition can contribute to a just society.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner June Oscar AO will outline her vision for the future and in doing so will cite key challenges and opportunities for change. This will include a focus on current aspirations around Constitutional reform and issues such as Indigenous incarceration, income management and healing.

Michael Mansell, Aboriginal lawyer and activist, will outline his thoughts on a national treaty with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Professor Megan Davis, Pro Vice Chancellor Indigenous and Professor of Law, UNSW, presents the first lecture in the new Practical Justice Initiative Indigenous Lecture Series.
