The recent appointment of Professor Alex Broom at the Practical Justice Initiative as a PLuS Alliance Fellow will bolster international research collaboration across the areas of global health and social justice.
The PLuS Alliance, part of UNSW’s 2025 strategy, is a unique partnership between King’s College London, UNSW and Arizona State University.
Professor Broom and his team at UNSW will be focusing on drawing on expertise across these universities to engage in critical global health issues, including, but not limited to, infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). AMR is set to be the challenge of the 21st Century, and AMR itself (i.e. the proliferation of resistant bacteria) and its remedies (i.e. the restriction of antibiotics) will disproportionately affect developing countries (limited access to prescribed antibiotics) and poorer communities in developed nations (more prone to infection and poorer access to high-level, formalised services). This makes it a core social justice and global health issue; and one that requires concerted international collaboration.
